Air Circuit Breakers: Working Principle, Construction, and Applications

  • The tripping mechanism is triggered by the relay signal, initiating the opening of the contacts. This is where the unique design of the Air Circuit Breaker comes into play.
  • As the contacts begin to separate, an arc is formed due to the ionization of air between them. The ACB uses different arc extinguishing techniques to quickly extinguish this arc.  
  • Once the arc is extinguished, the contacts are fully opened, interrupting the flow of current in the circuit.
  • With the contacts open, the faulty part of the circuit is effectively isolated to ensure the safety of the overall electrical system.

ACB Construction

Air Circuit Breakers are designed to withstand the rigors of electrical operations. Their key components include:

Frame

The frame provides the structural support for the breaker and houses the operating mechanism.

Operating Mechanism

This mechanism is responsible for opening and closing the contacts. It includes either a spring-charged mechanism or a motorized mechanism. 

Contacts

The contacts are the heart of the breaker. They’re made of high-conductivity materials for efficient current flow and are designed to withstand the arcing during circuit interruption.

Arc Chutes

To extinguish the arc generated during contact separation, arc chutes are employed. These are designed to cool and split the arc into smaller segments for rapid extinction.

Tripping System

The tripping system includes protective relays, a release mechanism, and other components that detect faults and initiate the opening of the contacts.

Control Panel

The control panel provides a user interface for monitoring and controlling the ACB. It may include indicators, switches, and display panels for real-time information.
