How to Install and Test an Air Circuit Breaker

An air circuit breaker is a device that is used to break an electrical circuit. And if you’re installing one for the first time, there are a few things you need to know to do it right and to do it safely.

Visual Inspection

Trip Unit Testing

Insulation Resistance Test

Check the insulation resistance of the air circuit breaker. Use a megohmmeter to measure insulation resistance between the live parts and the ground. 

Contact Resistance Test

Measure the contact resistance of the breaker’s main contacts. Excessive contact resistance can lead to overheating and reduced performance. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to perform this test using a low-resistance ohmmeter.

Closing and Opening Time Measurement

Measure the closing and opening times of the air circuit breaker using a timing device. This ensures that the breaker operates within the specified time limits.
